Review of Summer of Sam (1999) by Tomek S — 13 Jun 2009
Spike Lee rarely holds your hand with his protagonists - they're weak, flawed human beings who often come to tragic ends. As commendable and risky as that may be, this film doesn't sync its complex character to its setting (Son of Sam murders) to mean anything.
While they're paired on a shallow narrative level, much more could have been done to seal the thematic connection and make a point - ANY point.
