Review of Summer of Sam (1999) by Evan D — 27 Feb 2007
Spike Lee attacks serial killer David Berkowitz by focusing on the most important part of his life: John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino fucking in an orgy. The film is a missed opportunity of showing us the life behind the 'Son of Sam'.
The few scenes involving Berkowitz( a very dark and convincing Michael Badalucco) do show some light on the mind of a serial killer who attacked many innocent New Yorkers in the summer of 1977. Lee uses the REACTIONS to Berkowitz's killings to explain things.
It is fun to rediscover the music and mood of the era of disco and sexual liberation, but the film whimps out with too many boring subplots, and Leguizamo talking about his erection problems. Lame excuse for a bio-pic.
