Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Raül J — 22 Dec 2008
I can readily imagine Juliette Binoche in a few more years' time gradually becoming the same strong, elegant, eccentric and stylish grandmotherly figure as Edith Scob (whom you just can't realize long time ago she had also starred in the hauntingly memorable EYES WITHOUT A FACE directed by Georges Franju in 1960), this movie by Olivier Assayas talked about a wide range of things, like death, heritage, tradition, family, nature, living with and in art, coping with modern technology, globalised scenarios in doing business, intra-family adultery hearsays and gossips of the elder generation, compliance with the reality, acceptance, loyalty, nostalgia, etc.
, it is somewhat sketchy and there are bound to be some loose ends, but the feelings are still intact and touching thanks to the splendid acting delivered by the cast and the unusually restrained yet effective direction of Olivier Assayas (14/12/2008).
