I understood "summer" to relate to the stage in the cycle of life of the 3 siblings, and in Tchehovian fashion the past was making way for the new, and somehow the "summer" generation were lost in the middle having all the angst and none of the fun.
Some bitter sweet moments nicely observed. Juliet Binoche was ravissante.
