Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Dickie L — 18 Apr 2009
Quiet, reflective film about three siblings dealing with the practicalities of what to do with their mother's estate after her death.
Its oh so French: everyone looks beautiful, they're mostly restrained in their emotions and there's nice, tasteful music in the background.
Its beautifully acted and there's much to think about: familial responsibilities, honouring the memories of loved ones, the sentimental and monetary value of objects and just being a decent person.
I enjoyed the first half more, especially the family dynamics. The film slowly becomes more about the objects, which I found less interesting, although the coda brings things around to something gently ironic.
