Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Radek C — 20 Apr 2009
The movie opens with a family garden lunch in an absolutely gorgeous French country estate. As the film progresses the idyll breaks down and the family go their separate ways after the death of the matriarch.
Her bequest is considerable and burdensome, and two siblings trade their roots in France and family for a more contemporary existence, while the eldest son is sentimental yet unable to shoulder the responsiblity of the estate and its art alone.
Ultimately though, the art is freed, as is the family - and life breathes through the estate once again. An excellent film.
