Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Amilcar A — 20 Jun 2009
After the two turds I watched Fri/Sat Summer hours might as well be Battleship Potempkin. I really wasn't ready to make the transition from two movies that collectively made me really dumber than I already am and then switch to French art curators and character studies.
Summer hours isn't a very good movie but it's the kind of film that snobs, armpit intellectuals and critics will love. It has death, reflection and discusses obscure French artists with detailed dialogue about their experiences and loves.
This movie, had it been made in the US would be a schmalty drama, probably shot in the far north east and using an beach house as opposed to a French villa.
Overall the film is very tolerable, has some beautiful shots of the French countryside and all the actors are rich and complex. I don't think I'll remember much about Summer hours by next thursday but I would recommend it to anyone that thinks their shit doesn't stink.
I am so ready for the Transformers on Wednesday....
