Review of Sully (2016) by Dinesh P — 26 Jul 2017
Abjectly sentimental and unreasonably drawn-out, Sully manages to fill one hour and 40 minutes of airtime with a single conflict. The entire movie is about a heroic pilot who, early in the film, manages to safely land a crashing airliner before corrupt government investigators attempt to label the feat as dangerous and avoidable and a byproduct of his erroneous and poor judgment. The investigators act as if they have been paid off by the airline to prove some sort of wrongdoing on the pilot's behalf which is odd because there's never any mention of such a bribe in the movie. It almost seems as if the director has something against the government and wants to stick it to them any way he can. He portrays the government accident investigators as evil and morally-corrupt but never hints at why they are this way leaving me, the viewer, to believe he holds some sort of grudge against the government and simply could not resist the urge to paint them in a negative light.
And as if that weren't enough, there are overtones of female objectification and misogyny throughout the film. For instance Sully's wife, a stay-at-home mother of two, only makes appearances to stress out over newfangled press attention, to offer Sully verbal validation, and to breakdown emotionally.
TL;DR - Overall, a horrible movie. What a trainwreck. Save your eyes from this monstrosity.
