Review of Sullivan's Travels (1941) by Maddie C — 30 Dec 2006
This movie is really charming. I love it! It seems strange at first, but it's actually quite funny. It's about a film director named Sullivan who wants to make a picture about "real life" and real situations, not some old comedy, like all the other directors. So he sets off, disguised as a hobo, in order to see what it's like to live as a vagrant. However, Sullivan soon discovers that it's going to be harder than he thought to get the experience because the producers and film crew are following him around every step of the way! Soon he meets an aspiring actress, played by Veronica Lake, who ends up joining him as he tries to become acquainted with "the hard life." Eventually, however, Sullivan gets into real trouble, and then he realizes that in hard times like the 1930s, a nice laugh is the best medicine a person can have.
It's funny and serious ( a good mix) and Veronica Lake's character is really lovable. I don't know what it is exactly that makes it so good, but I just know I love it.
