Review of Sullivan's Travels (1941) by Chris D — 30 May 2011
A well-done comedy, that takes a dark turn late in the film, but ends with Sullivan recognizing that his journey to understand the tramps of the world has led him to realize that, for some, comedy is all they have to make the day go down easy.
The first half of the film I found particularly hilarious, especially the bus-chasing scene which had me in stitches. McCrea and Lake were a fine pairing, and I enjoyed watching them learn more about living town-to-town.
The film does feel a bit long, particularly after Sullivan was "killed" (excepting for the picture show scene). Regardless, a very good film about a man's journey to learn about another part of society.
