Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Ajala H — 09 Dec 2008
It's not often that I encounter something completely unique in movies, but this one is certainly a different kind of beast. I guess one could categorize it as being a modern samurai-western with Tarantino-esque vibes, and indeed Mr. Quentin himself.
It is probably not a good idea to make a movie with all-Asian cast and then make them speak English. There were times when I had no clue what the people were saying, and the dialogue mainly sounded very forced. But talking is not important here. This film amasses coolness points from left and right. The directing is awesome, with great angles, long takes and plenty of original style. It is also brutal as fuck, with some bleak moments and gory kills.
There is also one of the coolest female characters ever, and she even manages to continue her coolness upon her eventual death. Also worth mentioning is a certain bad ass way to shoot people that involves the wind. Nice. The movie is laced with the darkest of humor as well, which was actually baffling a few times when I was expecting a serious scene. Too bad, then, that the film is also extremely weird. There are many a crazy thing happening that makes absolutely no sense, and that I do not like. That was the ultimate downfall for me.
I do love how the Asians are always seeking worthy opponents though, I can dig that. I would find one myself, but I'd need to be unmatched at something first, and I'm way too lazy for that happening.
