Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Sal M — 18 Dec 2008
Sukiyaki Western Django is a visually stunning, incredibly amusing, and tons of fun, albeit rather awkward and strange, film that won't please everyone but is worth checking out for yourself. Incredibly enjoyable but not a film to be taken too seriously.
The awkward English aside (and this is really one of the more enjoyable parts of the film for me personally) the story is a bit jarring, and at times tries way too hard to be more than it is. The indulgences Miike takes with the Western genre sometimes work, but other times come off just as corny as they were in the films he's referencing. Don't try and take things too seriously and you'll be just fine.
What does work however is the gorgeous look of the film, an insane mix of Western and Japanese, which creates a beautiful world for this bloody, bizarre story to be told in. Equally nice to look at are members of the cast, with Hideaki Ito and Yusuke Iseya in particular looking darn good in the Western wear. Everything from the cinematography, to the costumes, to the set pieces, to the amazing use of color comes together to create a feast for the eyes and one of the prettiest films I've seen in a while.
In the end it's beautiful and alot of fun to watch, but don't try to take the plot seriously. Hell, don't take any of this film seriously, just sit back and enjoy the big, bloody, bizarre, mixed up mess for the fun kick-ass good time it is.
