Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Doug M — 17 Feb 2009
What a weird movie. I know saying Takashi Miike made a weird movie is like saying, "I like to breathe oxygen sometimes," but this one is weird in a different way. It's a Western... starring a Japanese cast.
.. speaking English. And it's pretty bad Engrish, clearly phonetic, making it nearly impossible to make a connection and get into it. Not that it's the kind of movie you "get into" anyway, it's pretty silly.
Some people even laud the fact that they attempt to speak in English, to which I can only respond: are you that freaking adverse to reading? Some people think the bad English makes the movie that much funnier.
Which is true... if you're a total hipster douche. It also boasts about its Quentin Tarantino cameo, who puts in another horrendous acting performance. Not without merit, but not enough to offset the flaws.
Oh well, I've come to expect a certain amount of risk and lunacy when watching Miike films.
