Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Eduardo C — 25 Feb 2009
Despite references to "A Fistful of Dollars", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", "The Great Silence" and, of course, "Django", this bizarre Miike film (talk about redundancy) has at least as much in common with his Yakuza movies as with spaghetti westerns.
Quentin Tarantino once more fails terribly at acting, but his "eccentric" cameo doesn't manage to derail an already eccentric film. It's hard to imagine what would, in all honesty. This may be one of Miike's most logically structured structured films, but that is not saying very much.
Stylish, violent and often random, enjoyment of this film is almost solely determined by enjoyment of previous Miike. The spaghetti western references are strictly a bonus.
