Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Mark D — 25 Mar 2009
This nutty homage/parody/remake of the western and samurai genres hits home in many places but unfortunately misses in others. While the visual style and exaggerated action sequences are both quite impressive, the dialogue carries a very strange rhythm that doesn't really work for me.
It seems like director Takashi Miike should have just shot this film in Japanese and used English subtitles, but then again, that may also have taken away from some of the humour that Miike tried to attain.
Either way, I was left with a strange mixed feeling after watching this, though I would say it was generally more positive than negative.
