Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Mike G — 15 Sep 2009
Goodbye No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood and Slumdog Millionaire... this my friends is the greatest picture of the decade.. just behind Oldboy of course ;). Okay... obviously it's not exactly Oscar caliber but honestly, movies are entertainment before art.
I'm sorry, that's just how it is. What I like about director Takeshi Miike is that he completely trusts himself and the material. It doesn't try to be pretentious or artsy, just entertaining and it's because of this reckless direction style that elevates it from entertainment to pure and visceral art.
Art is in the eye of the beholder and to mein eyes, it's art through and through. The story is simple... it's fun... it's an entertainment picture that too me is so much more because of it.
Don't see this movie if you hate awesome.
