Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Chad D — 08 Oct 2009
Takashi Miike's take on the spaghetti Western, complete with English dialogue that you can sort of understand, sometimes. Perhaps this is why I had trouble following the story in the beginning, but it all comes together and makes sense soon enough, only for the plot to fall apart again during the messy ending, which is one big extended battle sequence that goes on too long.
But let's be honest, you don't watch any of Miikeâ??s violent, campy, hyper-stylish action films for the plot. You watch them because they're so much fun! This is party an homage to the Western genre, and partly a parody of it, and I think it succeeds on both fronts.
There are some wild, over-the-top characters here, and also some sympathetic ones to help the movie maintain a necessary "human" feel to it. But, again, it's probably the crazy ones you want to watch, and there's nothing wrong with embracing that.
