Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Dave J — 09 Feb 2010
Good, very stylized Miike flick that could have been a lot better. Ok, visually this is a blast and action when there is any is very entertaining and of course the whole concept of japanese western is just so ridiculous that I can't but love it.
This is in a genre that I just love to devour at the moment. But this film had some problems, mainly it's pacing was gone haywire. Ok, the film doesn't have to be action all the way, but when there isn't any you really need to have something trashy or witty going on that keeps the interest up (in the trashfilm genre, I mean) and in this Sukiyaki Western Django fails in a way.
Western counterparts of Miike, Rodriquez and Tarantino knows how to pace their films and of course Miike doesn't have this problem generally, only in this film I think. This was 2h movie, probably the story would have been great if it took only about 1h 20min.
But as it was, it dragged a little bit, allthough it was still very enjoyable and worth watching I think.
