Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Gemma L — 18 Dec 2010
Wow... what a disaster.
Visually creative to be sure......
But "visually creative" does not a movie, make.
SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO is a difficult watch. The story is anemic at best and the films' greatest strengths lie in the sporadically timed instances of jarring violence and the beautiful cinematography.
All of this with some interesting "sight gags" and a completely baffling cameo from Quentin Tarantino at the start of the film that is entirely out of pace... and looks like it was tacked on at the last minute (which... I suspect, it probably was) by a cast, crew and film editor that were all sharing the same Psilocybin mushroom high.
I know Takashi Miike's work... he's not the easiest director to like... but when he's good, he's good and SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO is a curiosity at best...
