Review of Suicide Squad (2016) by Roxanne D — 01 May 2017
I've been thinking about this film since I first saw it, and I think there's more to Harley than meets the eye. The film actually creates a distance between her and the Joker, and by extension, the mythologized relationship that they both share in popular culture.
In the end of the film, Harley chooses to stay with her friends and save the world instead of indulge in the dream that Enchantress reveals, which is rooted in a traditional domestic setting with Joker.
Furthermore, Harley chooses to remain with her new friends and follow through on saving the world, which in doing, creates a distance between her and this traditional domestic setting as well. Harley chooses to remain independent of the Joker and this fantasy instead of falling victim to it.
It is worth noting however, that Leto's Joker is a very different Joker than the one introduced in the animated series. He is committed to Harley and is not in fact the callous abuser we know from the animations.
