Review of Suicide Squad (2016) by Teddy J — 10 Jun 2017
Featuring Oscar-worthy performances from Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jai Courtney of all people, Suicide Squad benefits from not taking itself too seriously. Joel Kinnaman makes Rick Flag more than a soldier stereotype and gives him real emotional depth.
Jared Leto's Joker, while inferior to Ledger and Nicholson, is very underrated and a nice breath of fresh air for the character. Cara Delevingne hams it up quite a bit as the Enchantress, but as June Moone she gives a very convincing portrayal of being both strong and helpless simultaneously.
Outside of acting, David Ayer's direction is strong, and the soundtrack is unexpectedly fun and well put together. While the film as a whole has its flaws, the acting, humor, and action make this probably the most underrated superhero movie of 2016.
