Review of Suicide Squad (2016) by Hayden P — 30 Dec 2016
From the beginning I can say this is clearly aimed at the fans, the character setup, the personalities are almost right on the money. I struggled to like the Joker, the presence is undeniable but the outer creation was a little too left field for me.
Harley Quinn is right on the money, Deadshot is great and that backstory is his Achilles heel. The thing I like the most about these DC films is the strength to keep the story moving while explaining along the way.
Nothing is ever transparent, just like the comics, you trust the writers are going somewhere. The villain was a little underdone and lacked a true menace but the threat didn't lack any meaning. I think there will be an extended cut and it may build upon this film.
I'm getting the critic frustration but seriously, why do we need them anymore? RT should be more like Goodreads, critics should only watch films seeking high quality storytelling. There was lots going on here and if you aren't into the comic style approach then you were destined to be left behind.
Loved certain points and disliked others but on a whole this film continues some of the good work in BVS. Geoff Johns has now grown into the DCU so I suspect these films might grow more like the MCU, I pray they don't.
Just had my second viewing and I have adjusted my rating from 3.5 to a 3. The film has great actors but it is severely mishandled by the director, the extreme characteristics and Killer Croc acting like a token black guy is off putting.
The story doesn't work and is really one dimensional, this was not a suicide squad story as the stakes were too great, this was a justice league dark storyline. DC needs to improve its choices on who handles the films.
