Review of Suicide Squad (2016) by Thomas B — 21 Feb 2017
Grade - C-.
It's not nearly as bad as the critics would have you believe, but it's not really that great either. Its got entertaining segments, and good performances from Smith and Robbie (although Leto is awful, and quite frankly embarasses himself here), but there's nothing noteworthy, and ultimately it's very by-the-book. Say what you will about BvS, but despite the final 40 minutes being poor, it did attempt to do something new. Suicide Squad has the same story as all the others - and that's one of its biggest issues. That and the fact that, other than Deadshot and Harley, none of the 'squad' are given any development (and their development is hardly good). The villain this time round is particularly abysmal, to the point where I actually giggled a little. Also, on a side note, the editing is really bizarre, especially in the first 20 minutes, with song after song ans montage after montage. That being said, it's got some good back-and-forth between members of the team, and at the end of the day, you could waste some time in worse ways. Despite everything, I was entertained and not disappointed - as I've hated everything else David Ayer has made, why should this be different.
