Review of Suicide Squad (2016) by Missbitey — 10 Aug 2016
David Ayer made some choices that make the first 20 minutes of the film drag, and result in some things that should pay off later sort of fizzling or being a bit head-scratching. I came to the conclusion that this movie feels like the collision of two different films - a "Dirty Dozen"-type Suicide Squad film, and a Harley Quinn origin story - haphazardly edited together. Consequently, neither story got quite enough screentime to feel complete, the intercut flashback sequences interrupt the flow of the film, and some of the characters get short shrift.
The film does a few things very well (Enchantress is spooky as hell, Harley is crazy a.f., and some of the effects for various powers are pretty cool, f'rinstance), and it was fun to watch despite the problems. 6.
