Review of Suicide Club (2001) by Anonymous User — 05 Jul 2009
Oooh, a commentary on the complacency of adults in regards to their impressionable children! Subliminal messages in Japanese Pop music! Connections to your wife, to your children, to yourself! Something about the internet! Bubble Tape made of human skin! Deeeeeeep!
That's all the lame shit I got after an initial viewing of this movie, and there may be an explanation to a lot of the symbolism I didn't fully comprehend. However there's a language and cultural barrier and stuff like this are subject to overanalysis anyways. But most importantly, I don't care. This should be one of those movies that people oughta mention when they talk about how generally mediocre Japanese Horror is. Japan has a ton of genuinely interesting stuff when it comes to Horror films, but if all you've seen are Ju-On, Ringu, The Red Shoes, and goddamn Suicide Club, the assumption is understandable. A good, eerie atmosphere in the very early going and some visually striking violent scenes lifts my score a notch, but still, fuck this movie.
