Review of Suicide Club (2001) by Matt W — 05 Jan 2010
Never has mass adolescent suicide been so entertaining!
Suicide Club works on a number of levels; it's disturbing yet palatable as an ostensible fairy tale driven by occult and arcane powers. It's visually arresting with edge-of-your-seat gore and outright creepiness, beautifully macabre scenery, and two of the most bizarrely gorgeous shots in recent memory (the bowling alley and the final skin removal scene).
Underneath its costume, Suicide Club is also laden with social commentary relevant to its home culture and human interaction in general. The message is perhaps best summarized as a condemnation of the modern family unit.
It must be said that this film is certainly not for everyone. However, for those into over-the-top spurts of blood and ambiguous intellectual excursions, you may react the way I did:
