Review of Sugar (2010) by Lee B — 05 Oct 2009
I find this movie very much a kindred spirit to the movie The Wrestler. However, there was a real great appeal to Rourke?s performance that couldn?t be ignored, and that?s the way it was written. For this movie, there is a detachment from the protagonist, but I think that was intentional. But that is really the only dig I have with this movie. It takes you through a wildly unpredictable journey for a baseball prospect, and you can?t help but be engaged.
It is a great bio piece that gives you all the ups and downs that are standard for the ilk, but also gives a very real take on it while not making it very glamourous. There is a subtle sense that you can imagine yourself in that fish out of water situation at least once in life and the beginning scenes on the island just give you that sense of how different it all could be. Plus, it had some really funny moments. Another great film from the Half-Nelson team.
