Review of Sugar (2010) by Josias V — 03 Mar 2010
From the "unknown/unseen subculture" genre: a heartfelt yet hopeful story about what happens to Dominican baseball players who do NOT end up like Sammy Sosa. You really feel for the characters who put their whole life on the line, and in an environment that is so alien -- and the crazy thing is, it really does feel alien to the viewer even though the setting (midwestern America) may be quite familiar.
I was especially drawn to the main character, who was brilliantly delivered by first-time actor Perez-Soto. finally, I liked how the rather cold indifference of major-league baseball is juxtaposed with the generosity of ordinary folks all through the movie.
