Review of Sugar (2008) by Matt P — 07 Jul 2009
A movie in the "Hoop Dreams" vein (albeit fiction) about a baseball player from the Dominican Republic who makes into minor league baseball for a chance at the Majors and his struggles along the way.
The movie does not take the easy way out and it feels like a documentary at times (you'll be actually questioning if it is at certain points, it's that real) but the performances are so good and Sugar's journey so incredibly believable that it's hard to stop watching it.
It's also a movie with an important moral: even if you have the heart, will, and inner strength, nothing is ever for sure. What matters is how you work through the obstacles put in front of you.
