Review of Sugar (2008) by Mason M — 21 Feb 2010
Very engaging, heartfelt journey with a talented baseball from the Dominican Republic, who is called up to try out in the US Minors. The film is anchored by a great performance by Algenis Perez Soto as Miguel"Sugar" Santos and has an almost documentary feel to it.
This is not standard sports movie cliche stuff either, as the third act took the story in an unexpected, yet ultimately satisfying direction. With the gutsy Half Nelson and now Sugar under their belts, I'm excited to see the next slice of life that Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck serve up.
