Review of Sugar (2008) by Gregory W — 25 Mar 2010
This is a really great film that is about baseball, but also about poverty, the American dream, and it's also a coming-of-age film. I ran across it on Showtime the other day and started watching it...stayed up late watching because it was so compelling.
The timing was perfect as I just finished reading the Willie Mays bio and he struggled with race issues his whole career -- and now here we are in 2010 and baseball still has race/culture issues. I always figured it was hard for Dominicans and other Latin players to come to America to try to make it to the big leagues but this film really puts a face on the issue and helps you understand the struggle of not speaking English and not understanding the culture.
It was also very fun to see Scottsdale when Sugar first arrives in America! Definitely worth watching and not just for baseball fans...
