Review of Suffragette (2015) by Matt B — 26 Oct 2015
Suffragette has some serious flaws, the worst one being that it fails to explore the characters that are based on real-life suffragettes, like Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Davison. Meryl Streep, brilliant as always, is in one scene only. ONE! Why!?! The shaky camerawork by Edu Grau is a bit annoying too.
Nevertheless, in a period where we continue to think gender equality doesn't exist anymore, Suffragette is passionately made and important for the world to see. The look and set design of 20th century London are sublime and Carey Mulligan is MARVELOUS as the fictional lead, Maud Watts. Flaws aside, Suffragette provokes you.
