Review of Suffragette (2015) by Cath O — 14 Nov 2015
There is no questioning the importance of people knowing this story, of the way women had to fight to get the vote less than 100 years ago. Also great to see women filmmakers/ writers to,the fore. However, if you are aware of the story, there are few surprises.
As a story telling device to those ignorant of history this is a good vehicle but as a film, I think opportunities are a bit wasted. Meryl Streep is in about one scene and the while Carey Mulligan and the rest of the cast is good, the film lacks cinematic or dramatic tension.
