Review of Suffragette (2015) by Bobby N — 08 Feb 2016
I usually love the ever-sweet Carey Mulligan, but the movie felt a bit too sour for me. However, perhaps perhaps the purpose was more to make a point about an un-enjoyable state of affairs for women in this time period.
It was an important cause, to be sure, but I wonder how true to the heart of the actual suffragettes this movie is when those who carry the torch and define feminism today are not as clear on what they fight for, and appear to be fuelled more by anger and angst than compassion and desperation for justice.
It does make me want to learn more about the suffragette movement, and consider how the issues of justice today are fought, so in that I feel it accomplished its purpose.
