Clift's minimal performance is as stunning as Taylor and Hepburn's innuendo-filled bursts, and much credit is due to Mankiewicz's sensitive direction and masterful blocking. It is the way the narrative develops however, the doctor as a detective, that turns Suddenly, Last Summer into such a compelling picture.
