Review of Suddenly, Last Summer (1959) by Leighton T — 29 Jun 2010
It's quite lurid for its time (cannabalism, homosexuality) and the story is quite overwrought (this is by Tennessee Williams standards though, so...), but Hepburn provides a terrificly menacing villain in Mrs.
Venable and all the gothic drama and admirable performances make this very compelling. The climax where Taylor's Katherine reveals the day Sebastian died in a layered almost hallucination of the events with her recounting, is brilliant and visually the most striking thing the film has.
