Review of Sudden Death (1995) by Philip M — 17 Nov 2008
How can one settle on just one singular moment of brilliance in this, Jean Claude Van Damme's master work? Is it the climactic battle on the roof of the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in which Mr. Van Damme single-handedly takes down a helicopter? Is it when Mr. Van Damme, who plays a disgraced fire marshal, disguises himself as a goalie and manages to stop a point-blank slapshot in the middle of Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals? Is it when Van Damme beats the Pittsburgh Penguins mascot to death? Or is it because all this fuss is over the fact that the Vice President is being held hostage at the hockey game, and who's going to break ties in the Senate if the terrorists do him in?
Actually, the answer is quite simple. It's when Van Damme kicks the mascot to death. I mean, that is something you just don't see in movies like "The Sorrow and the Pity.".
