Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by Anthony D — 12 Oct 2014
The film is a gorgeously shot piece of cinema, but the story didn't grip me as I wanted it to. The metaphoric battle / dance sequences were clever, but the result wasn't as cohesive and enjoyable for me as similarish films - Inception and Scott Pilgrim, for example.
The battles in Scott felt more natural and the dreams in Inception were less abstract. That said, I appreciate what Snyder was trying to do. The beginning and end of the movie were good, but the quest in the middle to obtain the objects didn't work as well for me.
I heard this was intended to be a musical. Had that been the case, I might have loved it a lot more. Especially since Emily Browning is a great singer and I fell in love with her through God Help the Girl.
Thankfully, she does sing a haunting version of "Sweet Dreams' as non-diegetic music. Maybe this would have worked better as a graphic novel? Not sure.
