Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by Steven G — 11 Feb 2013
Ahhhh Sucker Punch. You were so entertaining yet so flawed. You wanted to be so female driven, but you were oh so misogynistic.
Lets just say, it's worth seeing but go in with low expectations.
Here's a little more depth to what I mean: it's a dark premise of young girls being molested and abused who have to escape into their own minds to cope with their inability to escape a "man's" world. My biggest gripe is the lead villain who is so unbelievably non-threatening that it's an insult to women. This guy just looks like he's got a tiny penis. I don't know where Snyder found him, but I guess David Krumholtz wasn't available. I was also incredibly disappointed in the ending when there should have been an epic final showdown and our only satisfaction was our "heroine" kicking a dude in the nuts... take that men! Girl power!
Here's where the movie makes up for itself: the action was groin grabbingly good. Every time the girls went fantasy mode I went full blown erection mode. It was frantic and stylish in all the right ways. Yes, it's all over the place but that doesn't plague the film; for me, it enhances the otherwise weak premise. That was where Snyder shines. Unfortunately, the story and script just aren't his strong suits. My love for the guy isn't diminished but this is probably his weakest film to date.
