Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by The D — 02 Jun 2013
(6/10).
I probably like this movie a bit more than most people. I actually didn't mind the movie and I thought it was kind of entertaining. I am of course talking about the Zack Snyder movie Sucker Punch. Sucker Punch is a surreal action/prison break movie that has barely any substance, but it has a wicked style. First off, the plot is almost non-existent. Basically, a character named Baby Doll is put in this asylum type thing and she meets these other girls there. They are treated very poorly there and they devise a plot to escape the asylum. This plot consists of getting 3 things from certain areas. Baby Doll's job is to "dance" (the movie implies she isn't really dancing, but being sexually assaulted) and distract everyone while the other girls retrieve the items. Now, when this dancing is going on, we see these highly fantasized action sequences. These action sequences are AWESOME. They are by far the best part of the movie and I only wish that the rest of the movie was as awesome as these dream sequences. During these dream sequences, they fight humongous samurai, fight Nazi Zombies during WW2, fight off dragons and make a daring train escape. These scenes have to be seen because describing the ridiculousness that takes place does not do it justice.
Anyway, the acting is terrible as I was expecting, the plot is completely generic and hollow, the writing is abysmal, but the movie is quite entertaining. This movie is a case of style over substance, except the style alone was enough to carry the movie. I actually kind of like this more than a lot of Zack Snyder's other movies (300, Watchmen).
If you're looking for a movie where you just want to sit back, turn your brain off and enjoy, then you'll probably enjoy Sucker Punch. If you're looking for a movie with any traces of intelligence, depth or substance, then look elsewhere because this movie has none.
