Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by Xsaris G — 19 Jul 2013
Wow. The critics hated this one. People actually had trouble delineating reality in this pseudo-matrix type oddity. Its rather simple, a girl in a mental institute uses fantasy to help her cope with her existence and plots an escape with some other girls.
The escape would be interesting on its own, but when you look at it through the perspective of the idealized fantasy in the protagonists head, it is far more interesting, if only for its flashiness. But that is the point.
Trying to avoid a lobotomy is one thing. Killing a dragon or fighting evil Nazi steam-work zombies is more interesting if only for the visual awesomeness of it all. In 3D this is outstanding. So yes, weird, quirky, and kind of unnecessary as a whole, but it makes sense and is not at all hard to follow.
The Matrix is a far more complex version of this concept - this movie replaces the whole computer interface (to get to the alternate reality) with simply the protagonists imagination. And it replaces a post-apocalyptic survivalist sub plot with simply a survivalist sub plot.
So quit complaining and sit back and enjoy the ride, as irrelevant as it may be.
