Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by Isadore H — 23 Jan 2016
Two and a half stars for the action alone. Zach Snyder seems to be able to give us the most breathtaking scenes imaginable. However, he is sorely lacking in plot. It seems straightforward enough with the girls trying to get out of the asylum, but for whatever reason Snyder fills the movie with some things we never asked for. The acting is solid, but the sneaky-good cast could have done better. The movie is boosted mostly through Oscar Issacs talents, and the rest do a good job by themselves. Great movie to eat popcorn to and shut your brain off, but if it's a thought-provoking film you seek, look elsewhere.
Edit: after a couple days I decided to upgrade it a half star, only because I can't stop thinking about it. Did I miss something in the movie that makes the plot so confusing? Is there really more to this film that requires multiple viewings? These are questions I keep asking myself. However, even though I gave it a little higher rating and I must admit Zach Snyder has made a much better film than at first glance, it is unlikely that I will give it any more than three stars, because it is a really confusing movie that not everyone will enjoy. Fun to watch though.
