Review of Suburbicon (2017) by Jeff M — 25 Jan 2018
Underrated. Although this is a tale of two seemingly unconnected stories. The first involves a typical Coen Brothers crime farce with echoes of all their previous work but most obviously Burn After Reading. The second is a backdrop to the events with the local townspeople of the new build town unhappy to have black neighbours. There is a very clear connection between the two that everyone seemed to have missed.
As our protagonist Mr Hodge's son becomes friends with his new black neighbours boy, the local townspeople largely look down and avoid him coupled with the police being very busy with the racial tension all this allows him to commit the crime almost in the open. Many of the violent scenes take place in the street, largely empty because of the events elsewhere.
The acting from Matt Damon and Julianne Moore is first class with first class cameos from Oscar Isaac and Corey Allen Kotler.
Brilliant and enjoyable.
