Review of Suburbicon (2017) by Rachael J — 04 Nov 2017
What mess? There's really nothing so wrong with this movie. Critics were heralding a disaster, but when they provided no concrete explanations for why I should ignore the interest aroused in me by the trailer (like they did with The Book of Henry: I get why that was a bad movie) I decided to see the Suburbicon anyway.
Well, guess what? It was exactly what I expected, a Coen brothers-ish, dark comedy directed by George Clooney. Starring Matt Damon. It never pretends to be anything else. No whiffs of Oscar brown-nosing, no logos of wreaths and swags, and certainly nothing this worthy of the harsh judgement.
Just a Dark. Comedy. Set. In. The. 1950's. Ok, Clooney felt obliged to throw in his bits about racism, but that's who he is. He does that. It doesn't ruin the movie the way he's being made out to have done.
Yes, I like Clooney. I like the Coens. And I am black lol. But I like this movie. I got exactly what I expected and enjoyed every minute of it. And I'm telling my friends to see it!
