Review of Suburbicon (2017) by Devaughn B — 26 Oct 2017
This film is mediocre at best, and calling it mediocre is me being nice. Directed by George Clooney, written by Clooney and the Coen brothers...this thing really is a mess. All year I had been so excited for this film because the trailers made me laugh and I was ready for a great dark comedy!
When the credits began rolling, a woman in my row got up and said, "George Clooney should stick to acting." Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac are amazing here, but the fact that the film begins with this bizarre social commentary that belongs in another film entirely, really throws everything off. There are bits and pieces of this social commentary sprinkled in from time to time, but the comedy just doesn't work. At all. That's my biggest problem with this film - no one in my auditorium laughed, not even once.
It's predictable all around, not funny, odd; it's not poorly shot or lazy, just a mess that needed to stick to one story. Matt Damon is ok here I guess. I can't really recommend this.
