Review of Suburbia (1984) by Robert H — 18 Jan 2011
It's difficult to put stars to any Richard Linklater film, because there can be no fault found in the direction: it's totally naturalistic and believable, always. So any problems that can be found in SubUrbia can be found in the script; and there are problems.
It's too long, too gritty, and a little too dramatic for its own good. Nevertheless, it's an important addition to Linklater's early repertoire: while his earliest films praised the directionless antics of their characters, ponderous and irresponsible both, SubUrbia instead condemns the loitering kids; at last, they point out how foolish it is to "throw it all away".
