Review of Submarine (2011) by Manny C — 11 Oct 2011
Submarine is an odd little film, but a lovely one--a love story full of beautiful intimate details between real, albeit quirky, people. Submarine's focus is on Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts, terrific) a 15 year old Welsh teen who creates endless fantasies about his life, including his own death.
The only unwelcome things in his world are his life coach (Paddy Considine), the man Oliver believes is doing his mother (Sally Hawkins) and making his father (Noah Taylor) depressed, so he creates fake letters to his mom from his dad making hilarious requests for sex.
His other fantasies include his desire to lose his virginity to Jordana (Yasmin Page, excellent). Oliver lives totally in his own world, and thusly is a narrator that cannot be entirely trusted. Director Richard Ayoade, a Brit comedian making his feature debut, wonderfully adapts Joe Dunthurne's 2008 novel, and comes up with a unique and marvelous blend of mirth and darkness.
Submarine's a keeper.
