Review of Submarine (2011) by The D — 07 Nov 2011
Marvellously warm & witty coming of age comedy drama from writer/director Richard Ayoade(Mos in The IT Crowd & quite a few other things).
Oliver Tate is 15 and has two goals to achieve before turning 16, losing his virginity & saving his folks' marriage.
In a nutshell that's it, it doesn't allow itself to become complicated because it has no need to be. The characters bring a simple story to life excellently particularly Craig Roberts as Oliver & playing his parents Noah Taylor & Sally Hawkins. Added to that a brief few appearances by Paddy Considine as a slightly over the top psychic & former lover of Oliver's mother.
The film focuses on the relationship built between Oliver & Jordana(Paige) as they idle away their school days.
It's touching without that sickly feeling. Some very chucklesome moments along with moments of poignancy,.
Another great British film with a lovely little soundtrack provided by Alex Turner(Arctic Monkeys).
