Review of Submarine (2011) by Ale T — 31 May 2013
It has a lot of the qualities of the work of Wes Anderson, or maybe Quentin Tarantino through the lens of Holden Caulfield, but while still holding a distinctly British feel. It's hip and quirky at the same time, providing a distinct feel that's pretty enjoyable.
The lead character isn't necessarily likable, and at times seems downright pretentious. But then again, he is a teenager, so while I may not have liked him I did sympathize (and to an extent even empathize) with him.
I also just enjoyed watching his journey, and I enjoyed the distinctly British style of their environment, and the gritty beauty to it. This is at its core a coming of age story, and while it may not be the best, it's a pretty unique one.
