Review of Submarine (2011) by Michiel H — 15 Jul 2013
Has the wherewithal to present adolescents as a lot more clever (and perhaps a little less wise) than its teen-indie competitors. It's certainly Ayoade's inspired direction, which is somehow intelligently familiar without being derivative, that turns a pleasant script into a superb film, but the deadpan delivery (as cold, windswept and unforgiving as the 1980s Welsh coast it's set in) set to Alex Turner's restrained contemplative strumming are what make it an uncompromisingly superb British film.
No one is impossibly beautiful, everyone is awkward and the grandest gesture is a walk on a freezing beach.
